Some of the more interesting livebearers I've bred(pics included)
Finally got some ok photos of my fish. They're not GREAT, but some are better than usual. Had to use the flash, so there is some "Sparkle" in a few that isn't really there. lol I wiped down the window really, really good until it looked crystal clear...but the flash showed what I missed. BAH! I'ma use grandma's recipe for window cleaning, corn starch and water. Miracle cleaner like you would not believe.
Some of these guys will be for sale soon as I figure out what the shipping costs are and am sure no more freezing weather is on the way. Just not my pretty black, silver, gold and spotted male. :3
I have in here, mollies, guppies, platies and swordtails. The gourami is just for kicks. ^_~ I don't think you see the platies much, they're never around for photos. I have a few blue MM platies and a couple reds, the rest are in the big nursery still. The blue tailed guppies are only in there because the other males tried to kill their tails. =/ For the most part the guppies have their own tanks together unless the males give other boys issues. My two turquoise beauties got fin rot on their tails because the two others were -constantly- chewing on them, I'm hoping it'll clear up here where my much larger, more peaceful fish leave them be. Well, there's three in there but my big guy never made an appearance. lol
I got some very interesting youngsters, not sure how I got some of them of such color. lol But they're nice, thought I would share. Dad for the majority of these was a short-finned molly(he was silver with black shadowing and a yellow tail), and some of those kids came out really awesome. A pair of silver and gold males with spots are my personal favorites, especially the darker one, they also have a lovely sister who is almost as pretty as they in a separate area. Some of my silvers are actually "Silver" and not white, which I love, though I'm sure many would call them plain, they're lovely little fish(not so little anymore really).
Some of those fish look great, I wish you could send some to my pet store to liven up their stock. There are some times good platies, swords, and guppies but never mollies.
Nice. Have you tried Goodieds or other wild type livebearers? The are very interesting as well.
I have not. The male I got that looked like a wild molly was an adoption, believe it or not. I happened to spot him on adoption day at a local petco...the owner didn't know what he was and gave him up because, and I quote: He was ugly. =/ They had no idea what he was, just that he was some kind of molly. I decided he certainly wasn't ugly, he just wan't extremely colorful! I got him for two dollars, which is their adoption fee for everything small, took him home, QT'd him...and then he decided everything needed to be mated with when I popped him in my 55 gallon, including my poor male gourami who he adored, and my cardinal tetras. lol
I'm still getting babies that resemble him. He died...oh, about a year after I had him maybe. I had an epidemic in my tank and for some reason it targeted all my male fish...some skinny disease I assumed was a parasite, but then it did take two girls...after the last male passed, him, the epidemic went away and I haven't seen it since(that was around the middle of last year), no medicine worked, nothing did. =( This morning I found a black molly with a yellow tip on the tail like his. It started out just black, figured that's what it'd be. Guess not, that's awesome. I had him with about a dozen females, so it's not surprising.
Sorry, haven't had any new photos up lately. I need to get you guys a shot of one of my black mollies who came out pitch black with scattered gold spots and gold on the end of his tail like my silver spotted beauties with the same.
I got one new photo, unfortunately it's not very good. I was in the middle of changing their water so it's messy, but they all came over so I had to take a shot. lol
Mostly some of my guppies and one I believe is either an endlers hybrid, or some mixed endler, you can see him at the top(the one who is red and blue and silver, he's my favorite, his dad was identical I'm hopping to get more like him).
Nice looking fish! You and I have the same taste in freshwater fish.
If you're shipping use USP Flat Rte Boxes. Small square box $5.80, Med size $12.35 anywhere in the lower 48. I use them all the time and you can't go wrong.
Question, are your livebearers inter- breeding?
Interbreeding? No. I usually separate males from females and either give them away or sell them. I did have one incident a month or two ago, but I have no idea if they were even related. I had a batch of three different broods and a pair of males decided to mature way earlier than I'm used to. Two months old, I'm used to them choosing a sex at four+ months. ^^; I just don't know if they bred with any of their sister...it's possible, but they weren't very old so I am hoping it wont have any nasty effects, like babies being born(I'm hoping the girl was not matured yet). I'll be keeping an eye on the female of the same brood though.
I keep females, like mothers or aunts, away from males I keep, which I don't do often, usually I purchase other males for breeding to keep lines from being crossed. With my silver spotted ones the mother passed away soon after giving birth. There were only three, two males and one female.
USPS boxes and Mollies
I know about the flat rate boxes, but wonder about the postal service and the delivery. Up here there are a lot of temps, who don't have any idea where to deliver the packages, and a box left in the wrong place can sit outside in the sun or rain indefinitely. You might want to think about this...
Pictures are LOVELY, and I do love your special male with the gold/black/white motif that is so awesome. Well, my favorite always is the Marble or Dalmatian ones, and yours looks like a gold solid one mated with a Dalmatian to get the golden hue plus the B&W spots. I have some that look almost like yours, but too young to tell if there will be any gold in their colors. But yours is outstandingly beautiful (if you can say that about a MALE).
My cat babies are still alive, but you have to use a magnifying glass to see them. How can these tiny blips ever survive to become grown up cats? And my Marble Molly had babies yesterday, so hope some of them are excellent. Time will tell...
