Was sold as a "jewel cichlid" however not red... my GF and i suspected maybe a banded jewel, now that ive had a chance to explore some, im really thinking a juvie salvini...

what do yall think?

Yup, I'm thinking salvini also. If it has a black blotch in the dorsal it's a female.

I agree , looks to be salvini. This is often the case with the fish stores I visit in my area.
They don't replace the identification tabs (if they use em) and the fish they had last week or the week before are no longer in the tank. Is especially common in tanks that they keep cichlids in where one week it may be Frontosa's and the next week Flowerhorns. Does pay to know what the fish you are interested in is supposed to look like but often,, juveniles don't have necessary coloration to make this easy.
Is clear that the fish mentioned is not a jewel cichlid however.

Agreed. Definitely not a jewel and likely a salvini. Pretty mean fish, but certainly nice looking!

Salvini and most likely a male. You can sometimes tell from the shape of the dorsal fin and also the spot as mentioned earlier. What are you keeping him with. THey can be very aggressive

right now hes with my swords, but the only population suffering is my neon tetras. once he eradicated them he isnt bothering anyone else. Once he gets big enough to take care of himself he will go into my 110g with the jd and flowerhorn
