Rethinking My 30 Gallon Hex Plan
I'm doing a bit of rethinking of my plan for my 30 gallon hexagon tank.

My original plan involved keeping rummy nosed tetra's *my favorite fish* but it seems that they wouldn't do so well in my taller tank, they need more room to swim around.

I'm excited to say that my PH, which I thought was 7.8 is actually 7.4 *cheers*!!! yay for reading test results wrong *at least in this case...*

So... I need some help here in stocking options.

Tank Specs:

30 gallon Hex
Planted - though not very densely, as I tend to like a bit more open space in my planted tanks.
PH 7.4
Eco Complete Substrate

The tank is "new" however all the plants and driftwood come from a well established tank. I've got a couple of zebra danio's in there to facilitate any type of mini cycle the tank may go through. So I've got a couple of weeks at least to contemplate inhabitants.

My goal for this tank is color and personality. I'm truly bummed about not getting to keep the rummy's, but such is life... right?

I've considered:

A pair of German Blue Rams - love their personality and color.
Cherry Shrimp or Amano Shrimp

I'd like to stay away from: Platies, Mollies, Goldfish, Guppies

I'm really WIDE open for suggestions. I'll try to get some pictures up soon.

Here are a few pictures. Forgive the quality/lighting. They were taken with the camera on my phone.

The plants are all currently in a state of shock from the move. You can also see some of the potted anubias plants I haven't exactly gotten around to deciding if I want to tie them down or attempt to plant them in the substrate.

You can also see my favorite piece of driftwood, it forms a little cave!

i like the german blue ram idea you could get a hillstream loach or two. shrimp sound good. you could do some snails if you do the loach. one or two bamboo shrimp would look cool. maybe a dwarf gourami? two? maybe hatechet fish? the set up looks good for all of those fish.

That's a perfect tank for angelfish. They like tall tanks.

How would the angelfish get along with a pair of rams? I like the idea of angelfish. I've seem some really pretty orange and black ones. How many adult angels could I house in this tank?

What do you guys think of Neon Tetras? I've seen people keep them in 10 gallon aquariums quite successfully. Do you think they would work in the hex tank? Or would I run into the same problem as I would with the rummy nose tetras?

I don't know how angels and rams do together. The neons I would assume would prefer a longer horizontal swimming area vs vertical height.

Neons are smaller than rummynoses and aren't nearly as active so I think they'd be ok.

30g is a bit small for angels, even though it's a tall tank, so I might suggest other fish that would take advantage of the vertical space. Festivums are a good choice for smaller, tallish tanks.

I'm not sure blue rams would be a good idea as they like high temperatures, low pH and soft water and are sensitive about their water conditions.
