My Auratus turned black! Can he be yellow again?

I have an Auratus in my 29 gal african tank. He used to be a very bright yellow, and does still turn yellow for brief periods of time, usually after I disturb the tank, interestingly enough. He is sharing space with 3 other cichlids more or less his size. He does get chased a bit by a blue Johani, but that has always been the case. Lately, he has been a very dark color, nearly black. The top edge of his dorsal fin is still bright yellow, as is the back edge of his tail fin, but the rest of the body is black.

All of the Cichlids were small when placed in the tank, and they have grown together over the last year and a half. Is it simply increased territorial aggression related stress with age and size?

parameters:
fresh water with 2 1/2 tsp aquarium salt per 5 gal.
Nitrates: 3
Nitrites: 0.1
GH: 300
Chlorine: 0
KH: 300
pH: 8.2
