Flow rates for tanks
hey there i would like to buy a understand / Caniter filter for both my 3 & 4 Ft Tanks. i have common goldfish in the tanks allong with some plecos/ bristlenose catty's, what are generally good flow rates should i go for for the two seperate tanks. i work with many types of pumps & have some understanding of the effect head height / pipe sizing on pump performance (especially with high flow low head height pumps.)

I ususally wiork on for fish turn over of the tank 1-2 times per hour. obviously the bigger canister filter the better/ cleaner my tank / less maintainance. but what would be a good base flow rates for either tank.

Most of the pros recommend that your filter be able to turn your tank at least 5 times per hour..In my opinion the more the better, you can never over filter a tank from what i understand, unless its UV witch often relaxes the fishs natural immune system..

no such thing as over-filtration, except over-powering, if you put a 200 gallon filter in a 10 gallon tank, you will see the water in a strong whirlpool current which fish wont be able to swim properly in.

The typical published values are

10 to 12 times total volume turnover per hour for HOB and cannister filters and

4 to 6 times total volume turnover per hour for wet/dry filters.

5 times turn over for low stocked tanks,(if the filter is rated for a 20 gallon tank it means it has a 5 gallon turn over for a 20 gallon) 10 gallon turn over for normal stocked tanks. 15 times turnover for heavily stocked tanks.

those are very basic, with 15 times turnover the current will be very strong and not all fish likes it, and vise versa
