PICTURE INCLUDED!! Trying to figure out what type of African Cichlid we have, &gender
He or she was given to me &my boyfriend as a gift, and we've spent hours researching trying to figure out what type of African Cichlid it is. The lady who gave it to us had no idea. It's got one egg spot on its anal fin, and is very aggressive, atleast a year old, and changes from bright blue to white when its stressed out. Help me out, guys?
The picture won't upload, but here's a link to it.

it looks like a (Socolofi)... Im going to say female most males get 2 or 3 egg spots. My males do any ways. The females have only one thats not a bright.
i agree with mollies.....i have a male socolofi who is the tank boss and is one mean little bugger also.
I have one too, looks exactly like yours with the same colour shade, eggspot and head shape. It was sold as a baby as "electric blue cichlid" and while I knew that wasn't quite accurate, I never did find another fish it really matched. It sort of looks like the powder blue pics I see when I search, but his/her head shape seems different to me and mine doesn't have the black band across the top, although I read that some don't. So I just call it a him and call him a "blue cichlid" lol
Mine can be pretty aggressive, but he's also been raised in his tank with his tankmates all from day one, so they all keep each other in line pretty well. I keep him with 4 Blood Parrots and 2 Jewels.
Here is a picture of mine from when I first got him. He's bigger now.
+1 for socolofi. i have 3 in my tank and thats what they look like
sericinda Yours looks more like a zebra of some sort. I will look further into it and pm you a pic. I am going off the mouth and head of your fish in the pic. It dont apper to have the black in the fins and tail. like the socolofi's do. and i dont think its an ele blue.
I agree but I have yet to find something that matches. That picture isn't the best, will try to get a better one. He/she has one white egg spot and is a very pretty blue that in the right light really is quite intense, but no black anywhere. The head is what gets me...s/he has two "stripes" you can see pretty well in the photo that are very visible and always very gleaming blue compared to the rest of it.
its very well possible you have a hybrid. just don't breed it.
Here is a bit better of a picture. Dang thing doesn't sit still for the camera...the nerve!
You can sorta see where the egg spot is by the white blur lol
