baby oscars swimmin strange...
So.....we had a heater malfunction in our 160 gallon tank that wiped out both our oscars and JD....we recently got 4 baby oscars (largest being 2.5-3 inches and smallest about 1.5 inches) and a baby electric blue JD that is around 2 inches. The JD swims normally...and so do the oscars most of the time....but sometimes when i see them the are vertical....heads up tails just looks starnge. Its almost like they are trying to "firgure it out" (the swimming) they all eat normally and love to hang out together. All water params are good; ammonia 0ppm, nitrites 0ppm, nitrates 10-20ppm. the first ones in have been there about 2 weeks and the other 2 just added yesterday

they may just be settling in...i know oscars are known for playing they do this when they see you or is it when they carnt see you ???

Yeah most people I know who own oscars to include my self have witnessed very strange and bizzar swimming habbits from them the first couple of weeks. Dunno wahy, but I would think it normal... for Oscars anyways..

molliefan09 02-14-2010 04:02 PM

they will go lay on the bottom of the tank and play dead...this i know is normal.....its just the way they is very is also kind of cute...i enjoy watching them trying to figure things out...i just had never seen oscars behave this way...but then again i have never had babies this small either...

rrcoolj 02-14-2010 08:41 PM

errrr... ummm... I don't think this is normal behavior. I don't have any experience with oscars but I've never seen a shy oscar. Not at a petsore not in an aquarium never. I would seriously test your parameters and get back to us. A fish swimming "funny" is usually a sign that something is wrong. Trust me I've lived through it.

oscars only seem to do it when they are in a new home. other then that you are correct and they are not shy at all. when i first got mine it spent the majority of the first 2 days laying on its side under the filter or swiming at a 90 degree angle with its butt facing the viewing side

molliefan09 02-14-2010 10:27 PM

both our previous two oscars would "play dead" when anyone unfamiliar would approach the tank....all the babies arnt shy by any means they come front and center anytime we go in the room and already have learned to beg for food. they swim the length of the tank in a normal swimming fashion...but when they stop swimming is when they start sitting funny.....if i can get a video of it i will post it...

@rr i posted water params in original post....all is good

sorry about the heater malfunction and your loss....a couple of weeks ago we lost all of our fry (32) due to a heater malfunction...
when i got my oscars they were about 3 - 3 1/2" and would sometimes swim/float opposite of yours - tails up and nose down. i always thought it was just something that they do, i'll try to do some research on this myself and if i find out anything i'll post it.
now my oscars are 10 1/2 - 13" and the largest albino still plays dead sometimes and still freaks me out when i see it.

Splinter492 02-17-2010 07:39 PM

dont freak out but it could be swim bladder disease. i had a whole tank full of fish die from it and sounds like what happened to them. are they swimming like this all of the time? if so its probably swim bladder. if not that's very strange try doing some researcher about strange Oscar swimming behaviors.

molliefan09 02-17-2010 08:33 PM

no that dont swim like that all the time....just on occassion...i though with swim bladder disease they swan with their tails up??
