powerheads? what is the deal with power heads...my lfs told me that i would need about 5 for a 120 gallon tank...but when i put one in everything was thrown about the water is unclear and the look is not what i want how many powerheads do i need and where should i place them throughout the tank? |
they help oxygenate the tank and provide the current that the fish will love |
how many powerheads are recommended on a 120 gallon tank? and what are the gph on them? i found a place that sells them cheap and i want to buy enough |
there are many different types of powerheads, some 50 gph, others 200gph. Whatever one is best for your tank. |
I run three @270gph in my 150. PLENTY |
Would it be better to run 1 200 gal/hour pump, or 4 50 gal/hour pumps? The specific number of gallons are arbitrary. I am just trying to ask if you want one big one or a bunch of little ones. |
2 medium sized ones are best, 4 small ones are a waste of money, 1 big one might not get the whole tank, 2 medium ones are best, one on the left side blowing indirect current to algae/rock/corals while you can put the other one on the other side at the top of the aquarium to get good oxygen tansfer |
Good to know. Are there any "low pro" powerheads on the market or a way to keep them out of sight while still allowing them to do their job? I'd like a natural looking tank, and in all the discovery channel programs that I've seen, none of them had a powerhead in the reef documentary... |
you can hide them behind rocks and stuff, they are ugly but do the job, if you dont like the look then just get 1 big one and place it at the back corner of your tank. |
