Is it possible for a Platy to give birth half her fry, and then wait to give birth the rest after a few weeks?
One of my Platy's that I bought was very pregnant at the fish store and recently gave birth to 6 fry (probably more but I was only able to find six before they got eaten) I made the wrong move of trying to put her in the breeder net once I realized she was birthing. I know this probably made her very stressed and didn't give birth to very many fry after that. Then I noticed another female had a gravid spot and it's only been there for a couple weeks and she's not fat at all. However she was sort of hanging around near the bottom and in plants. The first female, stayed really fat the whole time and I thought it was just overfeeding. I also can't tell if she has a gravid spot because she is black around her stomach (tuxedo)
So now that I have new fry in the tank, I would really like to know which fish they came from.
It is. Fun facts about livebearers is they can hold sperm, pause pregnancies, and even grow multiple broods at the same time. =) They can hold sperm for up to a year without fertilizing eggs, or they can do so monthly, sometimes multiple times, for that time period as they choose after only one mating! It is very common for them to have 5-10 or more babies and then drop more a couple weeks later, this indicates they had two or more broods growing at the time. Sometimes if a female feels things are not...that great at home, she can start a batch of babies, but then pause it and do so for months if she so desires.
Also, not all of them get that huge. I have a couple platies that rarely show much in the belly area when pregnant and still give birth to a dozen or more fry here and there. Sometimes they will get large though, even if it's not normal for them to do so. One of my normally small brood carriers suddenly started having large 50+ batches of babies and would get quite large.
