hello and welcome.
i'm not the best on ID for fish,as anyone could tell you............
however is it Labidochromis hongi ?
i'm sure someone will be able to help.

Hi there, cheers for that it gives me a little bit of help; as i screw up the other day and bought 2 electric yellows and 2 of these types and not even asked what they were. I just picked them for there colour, and once i put them in my tank with some tetras and other tropical fish they started to get agressive with them.

willow 02-07-2010 04:33 AM

we have all made mistakes :)
they will eat all your tetras,i can tell you that.
they need to be in a tank of their owns species, you'll end up with just them anyway if you
leave them in there, the yello labs will be just the same(they look like yelow labs)
what else have you got in there,
what size tank are you running, and how long ,
and, just to add to all my questions have you any full tank shots ?

Here are a few pic of my tank. From memory i think it's a 70ltr tank. I also have a Ghost Knife, Harlequin Rasbora, Rummynose's and i think Phantom Tetra Black. there just the ones i just looked up.

I have separated the cichlids and put them in my 2 breading tanks as i don't have a spare tank just yet.

that's a really pretty tank .
ok my honest opinion.........
one of two things...........
take those fish back to the store,or get them their own large tank.
they won't take long to grow big you see,and as cute as they are now, they'll
grow into quite agressive beasties.
they will eat the rummy noses and looks like a couple of neons there too,and they will out grow that size tank.
it won't take long for them to begin to breed, and harass(sp)females.
gives you an excuse to get another tank lol if you are able.

well yes i was thinking about gettin another tank this week to put them in, but if i put both types of cichlids in together in the new tank they shall be alright ?

rrcoolj 02-07-2010 07:38 AM

yes what you have is yellow labs and acei I believe. they are fairly peacful for an african cichlid but wil beat up community fish easy. They need a 4ft tank to live in becuase especially the acie can get 6in and they need room to swim.

hi
i'm not sure.but i'll try and find out if i can.
the bigger the tank the better, plenty of rock work for them to make their own territory(sp)
try and research what they need as much as possible, you can buy frozen cichlid
mixes from the LFS,and various cichlid pellets and so on,there is much they can have, and
need fore a healthy varied diet, they're not hard to look after, and you can have a tank
with nice colourful fish, you need to research carefully which ones you want,as some
are very much more agressive than the ones you have.
what is the PH of your water ?
preferably get an API water test kit if you can, you can't really work with LFS saying
"yeah your water's fine"
sorry if you know this already,i don't want to appear pushy.:-)
