Im pretty sure this would work...

I set up a secound 55L tank and I just wanted to ask:
should i get 1 bristtlenose pleco and 2 Dwarf Shell Dwellers or,
1 bristtlenose pleco and 2 butterfly cichlid ?

So, what do you think the most compatible combination is?

:-)

Do you have to have the bristlenose plec?

Bristlenose + Shelldweller will not work. In order to have an appropriate pH for one of the fish, you're going to have to sacrifice for the other. The shell dwellers prefer high pH (~8.0) as where the pleco prefers low (~6.8).

The butterfly cichlid on the other hand is very flexible and can handle ranges in the low sixes to the low eights as I have seen it first hand. Your second choice is much better.

Thanks Kelso.

@cmc29 Yes i have the pleco already.

well i really liked the Dwarf Shell Dwellers, so is there any other cichlids which could co-exist with the Plec.

I'd check out Central and South American cichlids. Those are found in the same areas as the bristlenose, so water parameters wouldn't be such a big issue.

Shellies all the way!

I haven't personally owned them but I have heard only good things from them. They have a ton of personality especially ocellatus gold. In a 55 gallon I would do a breeding colony that would be awesome. The pleco wouldn't work not necessarily because of the PH. Thier very adaptable and I have kept them with mbunas, but mostly because as a bottom dweller the pleco would have no where to hide from the shellies.

Whoops thanks for catching that that will definatly limit what you can keep if it's a 55L. But you can still do shellies I believe.
