New Filter = New Tank Syndrome? Hi, just starting out! My Fluval Biolife filter has gone the distance, seems like it needs a new motorhead and I doubt I'm up to the task of wiring a new one in safely. SO it's time for a new filter quite possibly... But I'm worried this may cause 'new tank syndrome' for my fishes with Ammonia/Nitrite spikes and all the other nasties associated. My other tank is a little too small to quarantine the gourami I have along with others :( any ideas? |
hi i don't know the filter you have.........would it not be possible to transfer all the sponges/noodles into the new filter ? |
Also, how long has your tank been set up? It's possible that the bb in the tank itself (on decor, gravel, etc) will suffice. |
+1 on willow, you should be able to transfer the media to your new canister if it's the same model.... |
thanks for the swift answers guys :) It's a Fluval 'Biolife' filter system... I should be able to pick up a new one and swap the media, one website suggested they weren't in production anymore so I panicked. Turns out they are available in some places  will have to look into getting a replacement to the tune of £45...ah well cheers again |
don't forget to look at places like ebay, craigs list, freeads, freecycle, have a good look round befor you payout LFS prices. |
thanks Willow, I'm verging on buying a replacement motor head and doing the job myself, don't know how wise this is... on the off chance I go for a completely new filter is there any you would recommend for a 20 gallon tank? I was debating whether to switch to an external filter to allow more room. Biolife internal filters are okay but they look pretty ugly on the inside of the tank :P |
external canister will indeed give you more room. someone else will need to help you with the gllns side of things, i use Fluval and find them nice and quiet,i have also used Eheim(that was internal) but very good non the less. all the media from your old filter can be put into a basket in the .....let's say Fluval, and away you go.:-D you could put a thread in the equipment section and ask if anyone could help you fix yours,or just get the new filter. sorry i can't help much more than that i think. |
