New Orandas
Please excuse the water marks. I took hasty shots after discovering in the middle of my session my blue oranda eggs finally hatched and I had to attend to the newly hatched fry. No pics of the fry yet as I can't get clear shots of them. They are tiny eyelashes at the moment. My blue orandas laid over 500 eggs. I thought I saved only a few dozens but it turns out I have over 100 fry hatched and all are perky eating algae where they are kept.

Anyway, here are my new orandas under quarantine hence why they seem to be kept in small tanks. All are 6" long with redcap orandas at 7-8" including the tails.

Here's my calico, Quirk.

Whitney at the left with Lance

27 goldfish in all not counting my 100+ blue oranda fry.

I should have mentioned Velvet, Chingling, Melody and Summers somehow spawned too but I failed to get any eggs which is a good thing because I am loaded with too many fry now more than I can handle. The number of blue orandas fry may reduce at any rate in the coming days. Any deformed fry will have to be culled unfortunately and MOST in one batch often are deformed that culling is extremely necessary to keep the gene lines clean.

Whoa.... Where will you put them all??

Lupin 01-24-2010 12:46 AM

Scrap what I said about 100+. There are nearly 200.:frustrated: I was hoping to grab only a few dozens, not more than 100 but now I am not sure I did a terrific job with the eggs. I let the adults eat more than half of what they laid because the eggs are so adhesive to dispose. They'll be kept in large tubs. I need to buy more sponge filters. Yes, sponge filters because any other filters can suck them to death. I can bear daily water changes. Will keep a few if they're not just blue but lavender and other A few can go to friends I can entrust with. I won't be able to keep everyone alive. Some will need culling eventually if they're genetically defective and don't have capability to live a healthy life.

I swiped more hair algae from my fishless pond. The goldfish fry are loving it. I see a few 5 day old fry already having potentials just by actively parading around the tub with nice tummies. Everyone remains very healthy so far and a few should start developing doubletails after about two weeks.

I was supposed to feed them hardboiled eggs but the helper wasted the egg by leaving few centimeters of boiling water that it evaporated and cracked the egg leaving burnt egg yolk. I'll boil another one later or find quail eggs instead.

Here are some poor shots. The fry won't appear vividly because my camera can't focus on the blurry eyelashes darting around.

So are all these goldfish living in your old loach tanks?

Lupin 01-24-2010 02:12 AM

Yes, Jim. Where else can I put them in when the tanks had been vacated?

iamntbatman 01-24-2010 02:16 AM

Aw man, what happened to all of the loaches?

Lupin 01-24-2010 02:30 AM

I've sold them away, Jim as I found myself no longer enjoying them as much as I used to before. It just drove away my enthusiasm after having kept them for almost 3 years. In the other tank, I accidentally lost some when I relocated them in a large 40g bucket temporarily while I was sorting the gravel and all my decors since it needed complete revamp and a very dirty rag (possibly soaked with floor wax, etc) fell killing everyone. These were my tiger loaches and modestas. I told the helpers before they shouldn't have placed the basket of rags on top of buckets where I temporarily placed my fish.
