Danios dropping like flies
So in my 38 gallon I have been losing my danios. I am down to 7 now. 3 of them I never found any remnants,2 i did find before they got eaten. I am wondering what it could be? I thought they were supposed to be hardy fish. It is a cycled tank, but not running very long. It always holds 11 Peppered Corys. They are fine, havent lost any. As for my parameters, Ammonia=0,Nitrite=0,Nitrate=between 20 and 40 ( hard to tell the color but wasnt higher than that) pH 7.2 didnt do kh/gh. But I do know my tap water is soft and low buffering capacity.
Any ideas? Anything I can do for them? One of them isnt looking too good right now. Sorta curved spine. I noticed that in the others as well(that died). One of them came that way,I just thought it was deformed. I also had a green Glofish, who perished but also never grew very much.
Im thinking NTD? Hoping that over TB. Makes sense if the others perish as well, since several were eaten before I noticed they were dead. Also wondering if it is NTD will that harm my corys at all?
was there coloring (or lack thereof) like NTD? I don't have much experience, but I'd be taking those things out of the tank and either QT or return them (I know, that's hard to do once you get attached) but it sounds like they came in sickly. I am under the impression (mistaken?) that they were introduced to the tank recently? and the glofish as well?
i bought a group of danios and one died and I returned one that was sick and turned out the LFS had changed suppliers and were getting all kinds of sick fish. I was really fortunate that they didn't pass on something to my other fish. incidentally i also suspected NTD but also perhaps dropsy.
I too am wondering if fish were perhaps ill when purchased. It happens.
I would try different source for next group should you decide to try them again keeping in mind that danios prefer cooler water with some current with perhaps an airstone ,or sponge filter in addition to your present filter.
I keep a group of ten (lost two),, long fin blue danios in74 degree water with glowlight tetras and they are doing well on variety of flake foods all mixed together in tuppeware bowl. tank is filtered with sponge filter and Hang on the back filter as well. The danios very much like swimming through the bubbles produced by the sponge filter and current from the HOB filter.
Look closely at bellies of new fish before purchasing them to see that they are fat as opposed to having sunken bellies. have read about wasting disease or "skinny disease" with Danios in particular.
Well I got them all from different stores. Also Ive had them awhile. At least a couple months. I should have known when several looked deformed to not get any but I just thought it was a deformity not illness. Now I know better. The glo-fish,some didnt look right at all. Plus my lil green one never really grew. Are danios mass inbred and that can cause these problems? They also probably get them all from the same place around here. I dont have another tank to put these guys in,so they will have to stay.
Just wondering if NTD could harm my corys in any manner.
I've read in a couple of different places that NTD is only contracted via dead fish being eaten by tankmates. (I think someone mentioned it on our forum recently as well). I mentioned earlier that I thought one or two of my danios had this as well (though they also had frayed scales so could've been something else) but the other fish never got that disease. So maybe you'll be safe not using a QT.
I meant in the store tanks. Some didnt look right. As of now,the danios look okay as far as I can tell.
heh scratch that. 2 more died. One I found not eaten yet in the tank, the other was on his way out. I took him out and put in a small tank. Its now gone. No idea if the others will die or not too.
