There was a lot of potential; they could have gone into a much more detailed story of bomb technicians (EOD) which would have been interesting and dramatic, or in the direction of realistic life for US soldiers in Iraq, or better portrayed the post-deployment effects on families. This movie touched on all of these, but didn't really cover any in the way it should have, but it did use great equipment and put a lot of detail into the sets and extras. Lots of super-dramatic action and talk and little realistic outcome. I like war movies, but "The Hurt Locker" just didn't deliver for me.
But don't take my word for it, by all means see it for yourself, "different strokes for different folks".
