Goldfish?

Hello, :), Im sorry this isnt a "Tropical" Freshwater fish, but i was wondering if i can keep them in a totally unheated tank? At night in the winter it drops down to 40 in my house (Not the tank water). Will they be ok? Thanks :))

I've known people to keep them in with a heater set for 69 degrees...that way it won't drop too far down. From what I understand, it's also the easiest way...hope that helps!

Im no expert on goldifish but they prefer temps around 68 degrees. However I think they can stand temperatures a few degrees above freezing for short periods of time but im not sure. I know alot of people that keep goldfish in ponds outside and during the winter it can get extremely cold so I would say yes for short periods of time.

But I would wait until someone more experienced responds.

This would be what I recommend as well. I actually keep our goldfish tanks right around 70 :)

I would invest in a heater....why make them suffer with colder water?? the constant temperature change can't be good for them.....

what size tank do you have??
filtration?

For fancy goldfish, 68 degrees Fahrenheit is the lowest I would allow. They are more intolerant to temperature extremities compared to singletails. Fancies prefer their temperature a tad warmer. 72-78 degrees Fahrenheit is quite appropriate. If your room temperature falls below 68, get heaters. Keep the heaters in turbulent areas to distribute the heat evenly. Allow 3-4 watts per gallon total based on the room temperature you have.
