Balloon Belly Platy

When I started raising fish, my first love was Balloon Belly Mollies. But ever since I saw Balloon Belly Platys in my LFS, I've been fascinated with them. I've been reading that the male Balloon Belly Platy is sterile. Does anyone know which Platys are bred together to create the Balloon Belly Platy? Thanks!

I think the balloon "platies" are a cross between balloon belly mollies and standard platies. That would account for the sterile fish.

That can't happen, La Reina---platys can only cross breed with swordtails, and mollies only with guppies.

Our science teacher just explained to me that a "balloon" variation in a fry is formed when both parents have the recessive balloon trait. This comes after lots of inbreeding. Science---cool stuff.

Huh. Cool!
