So about a month ago I bought this fish they ordered in at petsmart labeled as predatory rift lake fish. It was so small I couldn't tell what it was and they had no idea either so they gave it to me for free. Looking at it and watchng it grow I came to realize that it is a torpedo cichlid from lake tangynika (sorry for the spelling). It currently lives with a warmouth and a green terror in one of my smaller growout tanks. So happy this fish is worth a lot and I'm definitely keeping it. I'm very excited as it is another monster fish to add to my collection.
"Torpedo Cichlid" is really broad because really all malawi haps can be called that. Can you maybe possibly give us the scientific name?
I guess I need to check more than one source. It's actually from Lake Malawi. The latin is Exochromis anagenys.
Wow! Lucky you!
You picked up a heck of a fish. Be crefull. They are fairly calm for a hap but they can grow to 14" and are open water malawi predators. The will need atleast a 6ft tank so they have plenty of space to stretch thier fins. Give him food, good clean water, and a big tank and you will be rewarded with a very beautifull fish especially if it's a male.
