Diamond Tetra with Black Skirt Tetras
Someone posted a pic of their diamond tetra a week or so back and I love it! I have six black skirt tetras in my 29 gallon and the diamond would make a great aesthetic addition to my tank.
I read that they are recommended in groups...does anyone know if, assuming I just added one to the tank, it would group up with my black skirt tetra? I don't have room in my tank for a whole group, I just wanted one "solitaire" diamond if you will : )
I'd not suggest to only get 1. They're more on the fin nipper end and to combat this you'd wanna house a group of 6-8; given their adult size of 2.5"....You know your stock and know if you can have another group of these sized fish in your tank. Otherwise I'd say no, don't risk having 1 and he's gonna go after everybody's fins in the end and cause troubles in your tank (trust me I just returned a group of Serpae fin nippers)
If all you have in your 29g is a shoal of Black Skirt Tetras (and maybe bottom fish), you could add a small group (5) of diamond tetras. They must be in a group, as indeed all the tetras since they are shoaling fish and will always be healthier in groups. I've had these previously, and only this week was looking at them in a store and wondering...
A very beautiful fish, but only truly so in a well-planted tank with soft slightly acidic water; in water that is neutral to slightly basic/alkaline they do not colour as well. And the plants and dim light (filtered through floating plants) really lets them sparkle true to their common name. I had two fry survive one time in my 115g, they are prolific and regular spawners when the environment is to their liking.
Angel, I had to dig in my research on the nipping, I'd forgotten, but they are mentioned as possible nippers when not in a group. Right on, Natalie.
Thanks, good feedback. I don't think I can add another whole group of fish (I already have the black skirts, leopard danios, a few loaches and a bn pleco. I'd not want to go much more stocked than this because to me it seems like a "perfect" stocking level. Maybe a little light, but perfect for me.
Plus, my water conditions won't allow the true "sparkle" to come out (I'm more alkaline at 7.8.)
