How Are We Doing?

This is the second cycling attempt for this Marineland Eclipse 5 (5 gallon) w/Mini Heater, thermometer, carbon cartridge w/BIO Wheel, Swim-Thru décor, two live plants and a moss ball.

Done another Thread discussing the other cycling and what happened. This time, doing a new cycling with SafeStart and a male betta.

100% water change done this afternoon. Didn't realize how easy it would be to take the water out with the gravel vac! Thought I'd have to keep dipping one of those small water bottles in to empty it out. Then, filled it up and added Prime (about 15 eye dropper drops). Tomorrow afternoon will get the Betta, put in the bottle of SafeStart, get the Betta use to the water and put it in.

Sure wish we would have done this in the first place!!

A couple of questions:

Should I do a Strips test of the water tomorrow, before getting the Betta, to make sure the pH level is good and chlorine is gone?

When should I add the Betta Log......of course, rinse it off first.

You can add the betta log now. No need to test the water for pH and your strips will not test for chlorine. As long as you did at least 2 drops per gallon, you're fine.

Done a water perimeters test (API Strips) this morning at 9:30AM ET. Haven't been able to get the Master Kit yet, but promise we will!
Anyway, looks like this:
0 Nitrates
0 Nitrites
pH 7.0 to 7.5
Ammonia 0 to 0.5

Looks like we are ready for the SafeStart and betta later on this afternoon. FINALLY will get this underway! YAHOO!

Why do you have an ammonia reading? Also, don't add the TSS without the betta.

Oh, we probably just read the color matching wrong. We are in our mid 60's and the old vision, even with both of us looking at the matching, isn't like it use to be! I don't know if I should be :-( or say it's fine:-) LOL

Later this afternoon, will get the Betta, add the TSS first, let the Betta "acclimate" to the water and then put it in.

Even when you're using TSS, you can still use as a guide this One-Sentence Cycling Tutorial:

Change half of the water whenever ammonia or nitrite rises above 0.25ppm, or weekly, whichever comes first using Prime @ 2-drops/gal, and 1-drop/gal daily until cycled.

When using TSS, that should be real soon.

SafeStart in and betta is in! It is a male Vailtail Betta.........a VERY pretty blue. We are calling it "Stormy" b/c the color looks like storm clouds.
He is just swimming around in the tank, probably shocked at all the room he has!

Will have to see if we keep the Betta Grass Pad in and/or put the Floating Betta Log back in.

So far, SO GOOD!!

You bet! My husband has been for longer, being 25 but I'm 19 and loved it for as long as I can remember. Our first dog was a black lab named Vader. (:
