I just take cuttings from the side shoots that form along the main stem and plant those. Sometimes I have long stems that don't produce side shoots but roots do grow along the stem. I cut it right below where a root has formed and plant that section. Usually where I've *topped* it (cut off the top) it'll then branch from that area. Make sense?

+1 for Kym there.
You can also just pinch off in height and stick these pinched off parts back in your gravel.

Often seen with Anacharis, when they get too long they tent to loose the leaf's on the bottom part, to keep that from happening have them grow maybe 10-12" anything longer then that pinch it off and stick back in the ground.
They also sometimes develop shoots coming from roots sprouting throughout your tank, not as much/ quick as for example Vallis, but some anyway.
