anyone with sponge experience?
I went to the LFS today and they have a beautiful bright red sponge. It's big, about 4 inches long and 2-1/2 inches wide. The color is fantastic. They have had it for 1 month and it is doing great. Now I do have a really nice bright yellow sponge that popped out of nowhere 2 or 3 years ago and it is doing great. It grew to a rock that was touching it, so I moved the rock and now I have 2 beautiful yellow sponges. I really want to get this red one. I know that if they touch air, they will die. The LFS guy, repeated what I already new about this and it made me feel more confident that he seem to know what he was talking about. Well, it's only $40.00 and I really want it but I want to here from you sponge keepers 1st.:-D
Depending on the type of sponge it can be toxic. Most sponges though are very beneficial. They remove toxins from the water and depending on the type they can also grow into beautiful formations. I've had white, black, yellow, orange, and this redish purple sponge. They all grow differently and take on different shapes. Yes you'll kill it if it is exposed to air, but you can still save it. Some fish do eat them so check that before you get them and some like high water flow and low light while others need no lighting at all and are completely heterotrophic then others that are completely autotrophic. Some that need high flow and so-forth. Make sure you do some more research and post many PICTURES! you really don't see too many people keeping beautiful formation sponges in the reef and that's sad to me. I wish mine had survived that was really pretty, but i didn't realize that too much water flow was way too much!
I Thankyou for the reply, Did any of yours live? I've had great success with my yellow one but this tomato, red, orange colored one is amazing! HELP!! I WANT IT!!!
It sounds beautiful! If you get it, post pics please. :)
Brain, for $40 bucks you just need to go for it, provided it's not of the toxic variety. You work too hard to not treat yourself every once in awhile. (I don't know anyone else who is putting up roofs in sub-zero temps!) Agree with Kells, pictures, pictures, pictures. ;-)
