I have often thought about setting up an aquarium and keeping some fish.
yesterday i bought a 60 Litre tank, complete with stand, filters, heater and lights, so have taken the first steps.
I am in Hexham in Northumberland Uk
40 year old male.
hello Ian and warm welcome to you.
have you any thoughts on how you would like to cycle the tank
and what fish you would like to keep :-D
here's a link for you to have a look at if you like.
Welcome to the hobby Ian! And welcome to TFK.. Let us know anything we can help you with :-)
No real thoughts on fish yet,
as for cycling the tank i treated the water with Tap safe and added some filter boost.
have ordered a test kit online as the nearest fish shop is 20 miles away.
advice is appreciated
filter boost is ok…trouble is that you need something for your
filter bacteria to feed on…fish flakes…frozen prawns laying about
that you're not having for a prawn cocktail at dinner
or if you plan on fish less cycling then pure ammonia is what people
any friends with aquariums ? if so ask them to donate some of their
media from their filter to you, then you can get some fish.
I will get some fishfood flakes from the supermarket tomorrow.
you'll need to add a fair bit,and i'll look rather messy all sitting
on the bottom of the tank.i wonder if suspending it in a fine mess bag
may contain it ?
How long do I need to leave it there
Sorry to sound stupid

hmmm don't actually know i must admit,i never cycled using it
i used the product called " cycle " and i used fish.
this where i need someone else to pop in here that'd done it like that.
never a stupid question.if you don't ask you'll never know. :-)
It will take several weeks to cycle your tank. I think that it is easier to cycle without the fish in it, you don't have to worry about killing any fish. I set my tank up and added a pinch or so of flaked food each day, tested the water to see the cycle go thru the correct stages, then it will be safe to add fish. Read up on cycling an aquarium and get a good test kit-not the strips- and have patience. I have cycled with and without fish and it was much harder to cycle with them. Had to do water changes and testing daily and I still lost 1 fish. Good luck and do some research before you start, try to know what you are getting into! LOL
