I have a pair of kissing gouramis, how can I get them to breed, if they're a pair?
I got 5 kissing gouramis, but 3 of them died in the first week. They were either killed by my BGKs or the other gouramis. Now there are only 2 left, and one chases the other if it comes into the middle of the tank at all. I have provided some plants for the more timid one to hide in, and the more aggressive one doesn't go in the plants much. I see them kissing sometimes, do males and females fight? I know that the kissing isn't really breeding behavior, it's more of a fight, but I want to see if I have a possible breeding pair. How can I get them to breed?
Them breeding in hobby set up's is rarely to non reported. You'd need HEAVY surface vegetation for one. Support them with a variety of healthy foods ( live, frozen and vegetables). Also they require soft, slightly acidic water to trigger a spawn (hope you have that?).
ASAP if you ever see eggs from them within the plants, remove the plants (and eggs) to a nursery, otherwise the parents themselves and/ or your other fish will eat them quickly.
And no, it's kinda like us humans you know...there's nothing you can really *do* to make them wanna have baby's ya see...;-) that's if its even a couple, which you really can't determine if it is or not.
