I'm playing with my stocking calculator. Considering a betta sorority, or a large group of male guppies. Maybe mollies. I am cycling, planting, and establishing my tank first, so it will be a while before I actually buy fish. :)

What would YOU put in a 46 gal?

I'd do something similar to my plan for my 55! Bottom dwellers, big gorgeous shoals, and a few centerpiece fish like gouramis!

Oooo, toughie. My loaches keep my sand stired in my 25 gal and they're interesting, so I would want some of them. I would want some kind of algae eater like a shoal of otos for some activity on the walls. To finish it off, I think I would have bettas, gouramis, guppies, or some type of mid or multi-level shoaling fish (not schooling as I'm not fond of the whole "hive mind" thing they have going on) depending on my hardness. Neo Brevis look cool too. They're a hard water bottom dweller :)

Tiger barbs, Albino Tiger barbs, Green Tiger barbs, Odessa barbs, Cherry barbs, etc..

But, thats just me, I'm a fan of barbs. 8-)

A big school of tiger barbs and a crayfish is my suggestion. Crayfish are super cool and tiger barbs can handle them just fine.

Crayfish are aquatic bulldozers though so not a real good idea with plants.

Sand substrate, nicely planted with a few choice pieces of driftwood. Fish would be a nice large group of tiger barbs and black ruby barbs.

OR...

Large shoals of some small fish (since all my tanks have medium to large fish). I'd probably do Rummynose, Lemon tetra and Harlequin Rasboras with maybe cories for the bottom. Again, sand and lots of plants.

I love my 40 gal. tank with small loaches, sand, twigs ,and few leafs as ground cover. A 46 gal. would be a great tank for small loaches, if you keep stock level low.
