Gar tank size?
I have loved gars since I started getting into the aquarium hobby, and have always wanted one of them. I was just wondering if I were to get the smallest gar species available, and keep it all by itself, what would the smallest tank size be? Also, just as a quick question, are there any predaratory fish I could keep in a 20 gallon tank? Thanks in advance!
I can't provide any help on gars, sorry.
About the predatory fish for a 20 gallon, I don't think there are many choices. However, I have seen Dwarf snakeheads that are kept in smaller aquariums such as 20-30 gallons. Examples of said snakeheads are Channa bleheri and Channa panaw. These snakeheads max out at 6 to7 inches, and would do well in a 20 gallon, but should be kept alone, as any more will be too crowded. As these are predator fish, you need very good filtration for them.
Snakeheads are illegal in some parts of the US and in some other countries as they have a potential to be an invasive species. So acquire fish legally and don't force it if it's illegal in your area.
African Butterfly Fish, Small Puffers, Malayan Leaf Fish, Spotted Bushfish
Not sure if I would put a spotted bushfish in something as small as a 20 gallon.
Badis badis are very small and very predatory and you could easily keep a colony of them in a 20g. They'll eat frozen and live foods and would probably annihilate feeder guppies.
Another highly predatory species I've kept is the golden wonder killifish. These have pretty large mouths and really enjoy stalking fish well beyond their ability to actually eat, but they will certainly eat anything small enough to fit in their mouths.
Come to think of it, so long as you had your temperature set correctly, you could probably keep these species together as the badis prefers the lower levels while the killies mostly stay up top. A temperature of about 76-77 would be in the lower range for the badis and the upper range for the killies.
