new 50gal. tank crashing
my mother just bought a 50gal tank and set it up. she needed to expand. its been up for about a month and a half, and now her fish are dying.
i thought it was ammonia poisoning, but shes running 2 filters. i treated the tank with Cycle, Ammo Lock, and Slime Coat. as well as some Sera Omnipur.
the fish had a white film on them, as well as breathing fast, a few were even flashing. im not sure what to do now. it seems that there are multiple issues. she had bought new fish, then the tank started to crash. can anyone help please????
For one I'd test all parameters (with liquid test kit) for Ammonia, NO2, NO3 and see what results are.
Did she move all fish over to the new tank all at once? Had she also moved the old used filter media over at the same time?
And go through this to ID your sickness that causes white spots/ film....you see the fish we don't :-) http://www.tropicalfishkeeping.com/t...diseases-8179/
She might've introduced some disease with the new fish if she didn't qt them first.
The fact that she's running two filters doesn't mean that ammonia or nitrites are in order, check for those as soon as you get a chance. Did she move any gravel, or filter media from the old tank into the new one? If not then the tank could be cycling which means ammonia spikes followed by nitrite spikes.
Now that I think about it, if the tank was fine with fish for a month and a half, it would've most probably have cycled by now... I'll blame the new fish for now.
Stop throwing in all sorts of chems if you do not know what specifically you are trying to treat, that will just cause further stress and deaths.
