i originally set up my tank with fake plants, and didn't plan for live ones. I am now starting to think that i would really like live plants however i don't have the proper plant substrate. I only have regular sized to fairly fine gravel, good florescent lighting, temperature at 25, and a 12.5 gallon 10 inch tall aquarium. Would there be any nice beginner plants that would do well in my tank.
your substrate is fine. get yourself some swords (type of plant) some nutrafin plant grow sticks and some seachem flourish comprehensice plant fertalizer and you should be doing great.
For beginner plants, I'd suggest a "mixture" out of Swords, Camboma, Cryptocoryne and some Vallisneria. Find pictures and idea prices here (that's where I always buy my plants, very good quality)
Hygrophila will also do well in your tank. It's considered a weed rather than a plant by many but it grows fast and provides a good greenery quickly. I have 3 types in my tank b/c I somehow keep buying it without knowing it????? (I guess that doesn't say much for my research addiction! ;-) ).
Regardless, any plant is better than none and your fish will thank you for it!!! Honest! They bring their heads out of the water and..... awww heck... bad research day...
if you do a search in this section there is a thread named list of low light plants. search it google what sounds cool and get them.
*sigh if only people did thread searches before posting*
If you want something that grows fast you could try java moss. I've heard it actually does well in lower light. Keep in mind you'll have to keep trimming it back because it can take over if you're not careful!
Other plants that will also do well in low light aqurium are anubias barteri, cryptocoryne affinis, lutea and walkeri and egeria densa. Well, at least those are the pants that are stated in my encyclopedia as doing well in low light! :-)
thats the link i was talkin about searching for, did the work for ya now you get to have the fun of picking plants!
