Advice on Rainbow Furcata/Forktail Rainbow
anyone keeps this fish here? would like to know its profile and behavior before I get them in my tetra tank. Is thinking of getting 2-3 of them. How big will they grow and are they difficult to care for?
Ahhh, the sweet furcata rainbows. Yes I have kept them, raised them... haven't spawned them yet, but some day... they are awesome fish, but be careful what you mix them with. While they don't get huge (2 1/2 - 3 inches) they are quite nippy. They do best in a larger group of their own kind, and are a very "busy" fish. They are also quite sensitive to water quality and drastic temp fluctuations. A group of 5 - 7 is best, but be prepared, they may fight amongst themselves at times. Getting too few together in the same tank means other fish get targeted for their nipping.
You will have to gague for yourself how sturdy your tetras are. Neons, phantoms, lemons, and serpae tetras I would warn against with the furcatas. Others such as diamond, congo, red/blue columbian tetras should do well, but watch the congos as they get large... sometimes that works and sometimes it doesn't. Gold barbs, cherry barbs, odessa barbs should all do well with furcatas, as would some of the other rainbow species.
With furcatas, give them plenty of space, lots and lots of decor, lots of clean water and healthy food, and they're awesome fish. Not a fish I would suggest to a beginner, but if you've been in the hobby a while and know your fish personality profiles somewhat well... I would think you could find compatible tetras in a handful of species. Just be sure to select them carefully and keep them all in schools for safety.
Hope that helps.
