Very nice. I don't see much of that around here. Did you buy it at a reg. pet supply store or mix up a few diff. kinds?

not to be rude or anything but your tank looks very shapeless. it seems as though the plants are evenly spaced exactly so and so inches apart. if you like it that way then good but i truthfully think you can do better.

I think it'll look much different when those plants fill in.

I've though about mixing some black sand with white but am afraid it's gonna end up a drab grey over time. That idea is better suited to gravel since sand shifts so much.

will be working on the shape of things once I get some more plants in and then I can do something better. The substrate is a mix of Flourite Black (Seachem) and extra fine black river gravel (Geosystem) I like the flourite black better, but it is more expensive, I will most likely get some more to darken everything up.

I personally LOVE LOVE LOVE black sand or gravel (or at least dark brown's) so I like your tank!!!
Thou I have to say, when I first started rebuilding new tank (after given up all tanks moving) I had a SUPER hard time finding fine AND dark colored gravel here.
But I think it just looks awesome, plants color seem better and the fish "pop" more, specially if you also add a dark color background or poster to the tank's back wall.

For your plants, I think once they start filling in, add a few more plants here & there its gonna be nice. Newly set up tanks always look "odd" IMO - Incl my own newly set up's lol

I think it looks really nice (LOVE your substrate) and once the plants start to fill in your tank's going to go off!
Be sure to post more pics when it does. :-)

Looks great. Is this a new tank or an already established tank? I'd like to change my substrate but my tank is already established and I wouldn't even know where to begin. Where would the fish go? Does it start a new cycle? How long before you can reintroduce the fish? I have black and white gravel and I was thinking of just getting a black background to match and make the fish stand out instead of doing the whole gravel thing. Right now I have a background poster of rocks.
