African Knives - Information please

Hello! This is my first post to this forum! :D

I am an experienced freshwater aquarist, but Knife Fish are new to me. I understand them to be shy, reclusive, and require caves to hide in. However, I purchased two juveniles recently and I have found them to be anything BUT shy and reclusive! They are active swimmers and eaters, and are constantly exploring and swimming agressively back and forth in their 55 gallon tank.

The tank is moderately heavily planted with 3 different hiding caves and Penguin filter that creates a fair amount of turbulence on one end of the tank.

Contrary to everything I've read about these fish, they don't tend to hide at all, but rather stick to the open water. They will practically eat out of my hand and I often see them swimming back and forth with the Corydoras school.

Can anyone offer information on this? I'm finding these fish to have a distinctly different personality than is normal for them. Thanks much!

Welcome aboard!

I used to have them.:welldone: I missed those fishies. They're predatory and I unknowingly lured all my guppies and swordtails to death. It was my beginner days anyway.

They seem prone to cloudy eyes but if given the good water conditions, those can be avoided.:)

Nocturnal fish, highly predatory, like well planted tanks with many hiding places. Man, I love those fish.

Don't they get huge? I think (unfortunately) a bigger than 55 gallon will be required, really cool fish though.

Though I've never kept them personally a store I frequent sells large ones in the range of 16-20 inches long so they get atleast that big if not larger.

African knife fish do not get as large as their Asian cousins, they will achieve some size. The largest I have ever had went about 10". They do not grow as quickly as their cousins either.

african/brown knives max out at about 12"
id say a 55 is fine for a pair
