Angels and what cichlids?

Im thinking of some angels and wondering what kind of smaller peaceful cichlids can go with them in a 55 gallon tank with the same water parameters as for the angels. id like fish pretty much around 4" when adults.

its cycled, heavily planted, driftwood, sand and river rock, soft slightly acidic water

nothing too aggressive or finnipping

I only want to put 2 pairs of angels and maybe 2-3 pairs of different cichlids

this is the tank

Dwarf cichlids or apistogrammas(mind the spelling) would be nice. There's also keyhole cichlids, kribensis, and rams off the top of my head.

i thought i read somewhere rams would be nippy?

ChristinaRoss 12-09-2009 03:25 PM

what would be a great colorful one?

rrcoolj 12-09-2009 04:05 PM

Rams nippy? I doubt it. plus angels are big enough to nip back. Mines did. They were no pushover. If a fish was smaller than them they would often "put them in thier place".

I think appistos and rams would be the most colorful but they can be tricky to keep requiring fairly soft water to survive. They also need clean water. And by soft water I mean not too much above 7. But they need soft water to breed.

my water is always at 7 or just under........that shouldnt be an issue....ill check into the appistos and rams, thanks

If you do get appistos get a cockatoo apisto. They are not only the easiest to keep but they are the easiest to find. Plus they don't look bad either :)

i think either would work in a 55 for you, especially since your water is alll but ideal, if its under 7.0......Apisto's could get aggressive if you end up with a breeding pair, but in a 55, your angels would probably be ok........if your interestedin apistos or rams, PM me and i can give you a local breeder's email address..........She breeds angels and apistos, has about 100 tanks of fish, and her shipping is reasonable.......Just a thought
