New tank choice
I have a 55 gallon reef tank, but wanted to set up a small planted freshwater tank. I was looking at the Eclipse System 12 but was concerned that the light may not be strong enough for live plants. So I also looked at the JBJ Nano and Aquapod 12 gallon tanks that are typically used for nano reef tanks, so have much higher lighting. I was planning on a school of cardinals, a dwarf gourami and maybe a cory cat.
Any thoughts or suggestions?? Thanks.
I just did a little quick reading on both. I think you'd be ok with the Eclipse system. All the Eclipses I looked at came equipped with flourescent bulbs which are what you need for plants.
Also keep in mind that cory cats like to be in a group, so you should get 3 or 4 at the very least. One by himself will be very lonely and unhappy.
the minimum for cory cats are technically 4, sadly some people dont listen and get less than 4. 4 is the minimum, 6+ is the reccomended
Thanks for the replies. I was concerned that the Eclipse is about 1 watt per gallon and it seems most of the plants require 2-3. I'll check it out some more.
If you're looking smaller than 20 gallons, you may want to think about lighting in terms of Lux per square inch, rather than watts per gallon. It turns out that, in order to get the same intensity of light in a 10 gallon that 220 watts gives over a 55 gallon, you need like 72 watts of lighting. Google Rex's Planted Tank. He's got a pretty decent write up on this.
