Filter maintenance

Hi y'all

I wondered what people do to maintain their filter? I have an Marineland Emperor 280.

Do you clean it when you do your weekly WC?

How do I get the algae off of the intake cover?

How often do you clean out the inside pieces, impeller, filter media, etc.

What is your filter maintenance routine?

Thanks : )

Not sure what info to give that would further facilitate useful responses (?)

If you have algae on the cover, just take it off & brush the algae off.
If the pads get too "clogged/ dirty" after several months of usage, wash it in tank water from your w/c, don't wash it out under your tap water (killing bacteria).
If you filter get's a much slower flow is when you'd wanna clean the other inside parts you mentioned. And this really varies tank to tank, depending on the amount plants, food, fish etc in the tank, that can be needed anywhere from every few weeks to every few months. And again if you need to clean this use tank water.
Either one of these 2 things should not be necessary to do each week! You also wanna keep in mind, that's where the greater majority of your good bacteria lives, so the more you "mess" with it the greater chances are you harm your bacteria stock. :-)

Hope this helps :-)

So I clean my filter once a week in aquarium water. I take out all pieces: I have an Aquaclear so I take out the sponge, the carbon and the bacteria house and shake them all real good int aquarium water. This means that I do a 20% wc every week - usually on sundays. Take out 20%, clean the stuff, and add 20% back in. The sponge I shake and twist the heck out of in the water to get as much gunk out of it as possible.

This has been working well for me so far.

I have the same filter, only the penguin (cheaper) version. I really dont touch my filter much unless it slows down. If the biowheel slows down i just take the wheel off, wipe out behind it quick and wipe the nubbins off, pop it back on, and swish the filter pad in the tank water. Only changed the pad once in two years :)

I have the Emperor 280 on my 37 gallon tank. My routine is to take the filter cartridge out at each weekly water change and swish it in used tank water. I haven't had to mess with the wheel yet and I've had this tank going since July 2008. Occasionally I will take off the spraybar and clean it out with a pipe cleaner as it will sometimes get clogged. I've only had to do this maybe 3 times. About once a month I will take off the intake tube and rinse that out as sometimes gunk will build up inside it. But that's about it.
