Joe, you might want live plants. Dwarf cichlids are often sensitive to water conditions. Live plants help cut down nitrates. What dwarf cichlids do you want? Some are secret cave brooders hence there may be a need for coconut shells and the like as their hiding places. Blue rams often spawn on slates or rather in an open area. I'd go with fine gravel or sand for substrate. Coarser ones should be avoided so the fry will not easily slip underneath preventing the parents from retrieving them successfully.

most dwarf chichlids arent menacing to plants, its the convict that likes to ruin plants.

My blue rams spawn on the driftwood in the center of my tank.
