Platy compatibility question
So... I'm thinking really hard about breeding platys, and my good friend has a 20 gallon freshwater with two goldfish.
Would platys be compatible with goldfish? and would they be able to live in a tank at room temperature? I've had many mixed answers in the books I've been reading regarding platy temperature range.
You can keep platies at 22C, so the temperature range overlaps the ideal for goldfish. A problem that you will have is quite simple. Your tank is too small for two goldfish, with or without any platies sharing their water. If you already have the stock in your signature, you could possibly add in a few more platies but are nearing a full tank already. Snail breeders figure about 2 gallons of water for each adult mystery snail. The zebra danios are at least a gallon of water each and the platies are 1 to 2 gallons of water each. Because the dwarf gourami is so heavy bodied compared to the other fish, I would judge it to be a biological load for at least 3 gallons on its own. A few platy fry would tend to push your fish stocking levels above what you should have in that tank.

I'm asking about compatibility because I'd like to give my friend with the two goldfish one or two of my platys when they're big enough.

A platy can indeed survive at room temperature but that is not the real problem with mixing them. To start with, the goldfish in a 20 gallon are already an overstock situation. If yo8u are going to keep two goldfish in a single tank, it should be at least 30 gallons or larger. If you actually have a desire to breed platies, the fry will not survive the predation in a goldfish tank, they will barely have a few survive with other small fish like platies, much less in a tank with goldfish that average over a foot long as adults.
