Tilapia Butterkofferi help needed
Hi my name is MalanoMan and i own two Tilapia Butterkofferi and i would just like to ask some questions. Currently they are in a tiny tank [not disclosing gallon amount cuz you guys would think i were abusing them i had no idea that they were gunna get this big when i bought them ] but anyway i am moving them into a 30 g tank. i know the recommended size is about 60 or 70 g for them but i dont have enough space for that large of a tank and since i only have two i think they should be fine. The one is about 8 in big and the other is about 5 or 6 in big and they're both about a year and a half old. Currently i am running my new filter in the old tank so that i can get the bacteria from my old tank into the new one. thanks for the help and if you have any advice or tips i would be greatful. thanks
oh and i was wondering if i could put any kind of catfish in there to keep the tank cleaner
These fish can get a foot long as adults ,and need a tank of 90 gal. minimum. I would look to see if fish store might accept the fish ,or find someone with large enough tank to accept them. You will not be able to keep them in 30 gal tank. Don't take my word for it google information on these fish. You may not have known that the fish get as large as they do,but a little research would have revealed this.
These particular fish are very aggressive and most often dispose of tankmates in short order.
You simply can't keep them unless you are able to provide a MUCH larger tank and even then, keeping two specimens may be a death sentence for one or the other.
thank you very much for your answer. I think it will be hard to find these guys a home since ive had them for a year and a half now and theyre getting pretty big. Do you think that the fish store would buy them back from me? Do you think i should sell them throught something like craigs list? I also have a cousin who doesnt live too far away with a 200g tank who might have room for them. Im not sure though. What would you suggest? Thanks.
I would also like to ask if i could put any other kind of cichlids in my 30g tank because i enjoyed my time with my cichlid and i want to be able to start over with fish that will fit my tank bettter than the butterkofferi.
I doubt that the fish store would buy them, but they may take them and perhaps give you store credit in exchange. Cousins tank would be an option if this cousin's tank also held Cichlids with similar water conditions and temperment. Craigs list would also be worth a shot and perhaps if you were to offer them free to good home there would be larger response.
I think these are handsome fish but the nickname,,"buttkicker" seems by all accounts,, to be well deserved.
Hahaha yes indeed "Butterkicker" suits them well :-D ill ask my cousin later today if he has other cichlids in the tank. Im probobly also going to the fish store later this week so i could ask them about these fish. Thanks
