aqua tech 30-60 filter

So I got this kind of filter to put on my 38 gallon. The reviews said how quiet it is. I must be missing something, because mine is far from quiet. I messed with several times to see why,but I cant figure it out. Anyone have any ideas? Or should I get a new one? I do have the box for it and receipt. I think. None of my other filters are this noisy.

I have a Whisper 60 which is basically the same thing and it is the noisiest of all my filters. The motor hums. Not real loud but enough that I can hear it. My Penguins/Emperor don't make any motor noise, just the splashing of the water if the level gets low enough.

my aquatech is also a very noisy filter....my whisper 40i makes hardly any noise at all

Hmm interesting. Its just noisy if you are in the dining room with the tank. You dont hear it in the kitchen or over in the living room,so its not that bad.

I placed an Aquatech 30/60 on a 29 gal tank that belongs to a lady at work and houses a few guppies and some trumpet snails. I can hardly tell it's running most of the time. On occasion a trumpet snail may find it's way into the filter and then the filter makes a pretty loud racket. But other than that, No complaints from the office personnel where the tank sets. This particular filter has been running for nearly a year and I occasionally take out the impeller assembly and give it a good cleaning with hot water and a old toothbrush. I have a aquatech 20/40 on a twenty gal at home and other than the water returning from the filter to the tank it is silent., I believe these filters to be quite reliable if you keep em maintained. The 20/40 at home has been running for over two years. Not bad for no more than they cost.

If I was you I'd bring it back. I personally didn't like any of the hang on filters that were on my tanks and replaced them all. For my 45g I just bought the Cascade Internal Filter Model 600 (In your case get a smaller Model for your tank) and I am LOVING it, it works wonderful and it makes ZIP sound even if you're right next to it (I was actually concerned its not working cause you really hear NOTHING).

I can truly only recommend this filter, that's the quietest I've ever had, makes my Eheim Canister sound like a hurricane now :-)

Take the lid off. See if this helps.

If it doesn't, take the impeller out, swab the hole where it fits with water condidtioner, replace the impeller and try the filter out.

If it's still noisy, take the impeller and the intake out, so all you have is the filter box and motor. Now fill the filter box with water and plug it in. When the motor is running by itself, what does it sound like? If it's quite, you can rule out the possibility that it's a noisy motor.
