What type of filter is this?
This aquarium was actually the display one at PetCo so I didn't get booklet with it or box telling me the name of the filter or what type of replacement filters I should get for it, so maybe yall can help me out before I go and buy some replacement filters that don't fit. :)
Whisper Bio-Bag Cartridges (size Medium) maybe?
That is one of the reasons I dislike HOB filters. I have no idea what brand your filter is. But if your replace that pad you will remove most of your good bacteria. This will cause your tank to recycle. And is another reason I don't use HOB filters, I can't work with only one little thing of media.
My suggestion to you is to not bother replacing it. You don't need to replace them until they start falling apart. You should just be cleaning it regularly. To do so take the insert pad and clean it using water from the tank or dechlorinated water. Its best to use tank water, reduces your waste water.
I have a couple of those from Canada's answer to petco (petcetera). They are pretty much just a generic pet-store brand filter, clearly manufactured by the same company. As far as I know they only fit house-brand filter inserts, but I think a bio bag might work.
Honestly though, don't worry about replacing the filter insert. Carbon deactivates after a few days and after that they pretty much become covered in nitrifying bacteria. These particular inserts are very durable... I have been running the same one for months and remarkably it has not fallen apart or anything.
The risky thing about replacing them is that you totally lose your cycle: wheras most HOBs have a black sponge that stays in all the time to keep bacteria in the filter when you change the cartridge, this filter doesn't have one so everytime you change the insert you take all the bacteria out.
Good little filter though, some of the motors are a bit noisy but otherwise it's proven reliable so far!
How many gallons is it rated for? If you can measure it across the top I'll compare it to mine and see if we have the same size. Then I can dig out the box and give you at least some idea of the model and tell you whether a medium bio-bag will fit (I know they're too big for mine, the smallest model).
i've got one like that on my little Ten glln.
works well, and i put noodles in it from my fluval filter.
i find it very easy to clean.
I've seen similar filters sold under the Azoo brand...they seem to specialize in filters for very small tanks.
