Starting up a new tank
Hey guys, im kinda new to this thread and i need help setting up a tiger oscar tank. I have a 50 gallon tank right now and planning to get baby oscars. How do i start with the tank water. I have a water purifier that makes it safe for fishes. Is that all i need to get the water safe? Thanks.
you need to first let the tank cycle....there are several threads on this forum on what cycling is and how to properly do it. You should invest in a liquid mater test kit, like the one made by API. You will want to test ph, ammonia, nitrites, nitrates.....and i would even recommend a kh/gh test kit, API makes this too. I would also recommend using a water conditioner such as PRIME. Im not to up on my oscar knowledge, but several others on here are and i am sure they will be along with some more info for you
I cycled my tank with apple snails. :) for 3 months
here is a link regarding cycling....Beginner stuff: Cycling and Water Changes
Alright, thanks soo much. Thats probably where i went wrong when i got my pacu's. Ill learn from my mistake.
live and learn!! You will get it, especially with the help of all the members here!! they are wonderful and are willing to answer any question, no matter how trivial you may think it is....it may mean the success of your tank.....just be patient and take your time and research EVERY fish you think you may be interested in before making a spur of the moment decision and ask, ask, ask....someone if always here with an answer for you;-)
Alright one last question. You know how your suppose to do a huge water change after the cycle. The new water you add, do you need to add water conditioner to it and can you add fishes right away?
Lets start here you most likely had ich in your tank. I just read your other post, HelpASAP Now with that said. you will not be ready for fish for 2 months . So that way the ich can die off. Can you answer thes questions.
Do you have a heater?
What type of filter?
As molliefan said you will want to get a API master test kit. You can use your tap water with a condtioner such as PRIME. You dont need to run your water through a purifier. Unless you want your PH to go down, for softer water. ect. In my opinion your tank is to small to keep oscars in. You will want a 75 gallon or larger. larger would be better. There are many SA cichlids and AF cichlids you could stock in a 50 gallon but oscars no.
Yeah i have a filter and heater. What kinds of cichlids can i keep in a 50gallon tank alone?
What kind do you like?
