I bought guppies from the store about 2.5 weeks ago. There is a picture of one of the guppies below. The guppy has continued growing and the "gravid spots" have been getting darker and darker. I am looking for advice. I have a friend willing to to take at least some of the fry if they live but I do not really know what to do. I wasn't planning on having fry and have been trying to figure out more information about what to do. Unfortunately I do not really have the money to buy a whole lot of stuff for her. I have a 5.5 gallon tank with a filter and bubbler. I do not have another tank to put the fry in. I do not have anything for breeding either. I wanted to do it some day when I had the money and time but I don't really have either right now. I have 2 other of the 4 guppies that might also be pregnant but they are not getting as big as this one is.
I am fairly handy so if I can make some of the stuff I need if that is at all possible. I made a sort of container to hang in the tank from a Milk Jug and I can use that if I need to to keep the fry in.
anyways...if you can give any advice it would be appreciated.
well you are on the right path.... i would recoment making a breeders net you could use some plastic canvas (about $1) and stretch some pantyhose over it to keep the fry from escaping untill they are to big to fit through the holes. a milk jug is a good idea but you would have to make a ton of little holes so that the water would stay fresh and waist would get out.... and not teh little ones LOL.... i breed guppies so if you need more advice i am more than willing to help out and trust me there are a lot of very experianced and wonderful people her to help along the way .... welcom :)
Congrats on the pregant gup. you said that you had a 5.5 gallon tank, does it have any decorations or places the fry can hide where the female gup can't get to? if not then i have a feeling that you will have a female guppy that is full on its own babies...sorry if its a little harsh. I learned this lesson the when i just started out.
I didn't plan on having fry anytime soon but it was pregnant when i got it...i only have 4 females...
Thanks for the help!
plastic will probably work! i haven't used it before but i do known people on this forum have. Try and bunch up the "plants" in the same spot so the fry can hide. Good Luck
yeah bunching works really good ..... unfortunately you still get a few fry who think they are one of the big ones and try to get out and out run every body LOL... well they make a good high protien meal any how :(!!!!!
