Dwarf gourami quality
I was reading reciently that the quality of Dwarf gourami's had declined in recent years but my local LFS had a really good stock recently. I ended up getting 1 male and 2 females (i think) and they are VERY healthy. Might be the gene pool is getting deeper? Ill post pics as soon as I can.
1 quirk with them. These are bubble nest fish and I was planning to turn off my bubbler to provide still water for the bubble nest. Didn't work out that way. They love the bubble wall and play in it all the time lol. No babies for me I guess.
Dwarf gouramis are not an easy to spawn fish in a home aquarium, for starters. Just because you provide the right situation for them does not ensure a successful spawn.
What you can do is to add a control valve to the airline attached to the bubble wall, which gives you the ability to control the stream of bubbles coming from it. This can easily be turned down to allow them some bubble action while still leaving a part of the surface of the water somewhat still if they do decide spawning is the thing to do. Also keep in mind that only mature fish will spawn. It is very possible your fish are still too young and just not ready for that yet. Give them time, be patient, and enjoy them.
Once you post photos we can help you determine the sex of the fish.
No biggie either way. I didn't get them to breed just got 'em because they were active and healthy. I actually have 2 males and 1 female. 1 male is blue stripe and the other is a Flame. cannot tell what variety the female is since she has almost no coloration. the males get along fine and are inseparable. no fighting or nipping, female spends most of her time playing with the danios.
When and if I breed them ill set up a breed tank. Craigslist usually has a few 10 gallon tanks for $10 or less.
Better late than never. I was only able to get pics of my 2 male gouramis. 1 is a flame (who insists on moving everytime I take pics.) and the other is my blue.
And the Flame graces us with a still shot :)
Awww they are so cute
I love my Gourami :)
Very nice fish you have.
Nice fish! I hope you have better luck with them than I did. I started out with three dwarf blues in April, and the last one just died a few days ago. They have been some of the only fish deaths I've had. My girlfriend has had lots of mollies and guppies go, but in my tanks it's been the gouramis. Too bad, they are cool fish. Good luck with yours.
Herky, if you start a thread of your own maybe we can help you figure out what went wrong with your gouramis? If you had 3 blues then you had 3 males... unless it was in a good size tank with lots of decorations, especially in the top 1/3 of the tank, that alone would bring issues.
I must have gotten lucky too, Jerryed, because I have some extremely healthy male gouramis, one powder blue dwarf and 2 flames dwarfs. They are very active and they are inseparable, especially the flames. I have not seen any fin nipping or territory issues in my 20 gallon with this trio.
As bettababy stated, an air control valve is a good idea. I just put one on my airline and it made it a much more appropriate environment for them!
