Science Fair Project help: Guppy, Endler or Molly hybrid
My son is doing a science fair project. He is trying to breed a hybrid. Here is the link to the project idea. The project calls for male Guppies and female Endlers.
The problem is that I need pure strain Endlers. I have only been able to track down juveniles in our area. The project has to be finished by January 31st. So, I need adults that can breed. I have been doing some research and found that Mollies and Guppies are also supposed to breed well.
My question is will Molly/Guppies breed as easily/quickly as Endler/Guppies? I only have two months. Also, the project says to get 5 male Guppies and 5 female Endlers to ensure that they breed within the timeline. The reasearch I have done says to get trios (1male x 2females). Is the 1x1 ratio best for this short of time? or is the trio always best? I will separate the females after they give birth. I do NOT want to keep a having fry! So, the males won't have long to annoy the females. Which from what I read is the reason for the trio rule.
Petsmart has both Guppies and Mollies on sale for $1 this weekend!
Where are you located? You'll need to look into cycling the tank if you haven't already. Two months isn't much time for a breeding project unless you're familiar with keeping & breeding fish.
Kentucky. My brother is going to help us he live down the street. He is fish Obsessed! He has been breeding and caring for fish since he was a kid. He has a Giant pond and knows each and every fish in it! He has I don't even know how many freshwater tanks. Including a giant one that it the length of his basement wall! I know it isn't long. They just sent home the info on the fair and my son begged and begged to do this one. lol I'm doing lots of research and have already started getting the tank ready.
Adrian at swampriveraquatics.com can fix you right up. Swords and plays hybredtize easily. Guppys and molly can, but it is not as likely to happen fast. I have some Chili Endlers, one heck of a cross I might add. I no longer have any guppys. Let me know if I can help you out.
Please keep us posted, I'll be interested to see how this works out. Any females you get now will almost certainly be pregnant so any babies birthed within the next 4-6 weeks will probaly not be crosses. You might get lucky though! Good luck
I'm also curious how this ends up. It is unfortunately not likely to happen fast though. I had mollies and guppies in a tank together for more than a year without hybrids...recently I got some though...by recently I mean born only about a week or so ago. This happened between a guppy who was actually raised with mollies as fry. Some just wont try to breed! I ended up with some gold dust molly, and marble molly mixed with a red tuxedo cobra guppy by accident. They're still fry so I have no idea how that will end up. Let us know how your project goes, if it does go...which it eventually will but may not be in time for the school project.
If you need an assist, I have both N Class Endlers, Guppys and Hybreds. If you're interested P.M. me.
