Just a few questions..

Hey everyone. I've been a member for a while now, but I haven't really talked any so.. hello!

I've been (lightly) reading about saltwater aquariums off and on for over a year now. I'll be moving into a new apartment in a few months with my kiwi boyfriend, so I thought then would be a good time to set up my first salty tank. :)

I've only ever had freshwater tanks, but salt water has always been something I've wanted to try.

So, these upcoming months I hope you put up with all of my questions..

My first issue is with the tank. Right now, I have a 29 gallon.. a 20, and a few 10 gallons laying around. What I'd like to do is set up the 29 gallon as a QT tank, and possibly set up the 20 gallon as a sump. My display tank would be an acrylic 40 gallon breeder. The problem I have with my other tanks is that it's not wide enough for the live rocks, so I thought a wide tank would be a lot better.

My question about that -- Does that sound like an okay idea? If not, do you have a better suggestion for me?

I'm not sure about brands of skimmers, or what lights to use yet (and I'm sorry to ask this if it's a sticky..) but, is there any good places you can point me so that I can read about it? I'd really like to do a reef tank, so I know the lights will be very important.

The kind of fish I'm interested in keeping are clowns and firefish. Yeah, I know.. you probably saw that coming. I'm not really sure what else I'd want, but I want to pick my fish out in advance to make sure the tank I set up for them will be good.

I'm going to be doing a lot of reading these next few months, along with list making and saving. I hope to be able to document my tank building on this forum in the future. If you have any other suggestions, or tips I'd really be grateful. Thank you.

Perfect!!!!! This is an awesome decision. Very nice.

For your next step I think you need to design the sump. This will give you a footprint for making skimmer choices. Get with OF2F or Austin on sump designs. Austin has a nice sticky on sumps.

Well, my first set back. If my memory serves me right, there was copper medicine used in the 20 gallon. The other tanks are medicine free, so I'm not worried about them. I'll just have to figure out a new sump set up, and just sell the 20 gal/stand.

Thanks for the link, 1F2F, that helped me locate that a lot faster haha. It was a good read and gave me a better understanding of how to set up the sump.

Oh, a quick question, I tried to use the chat feature but it said I had to post more. How much more, exactly? xD

On the sump set up, should I stick with a 20 gallon?
