wow that's a awesome deal all for free!!! i would have to say a starting point of some rummy nose tetras or a type of gourami or how ever you spell their name love their variety of color. what is the ph of your tap though to give you some specific fish that would work with your ph instead of against it.

Is the tank long or tall?

I like African Cichlids but if the tank is tall I'm not sure what cichs would be good for a tall tank.

Mbunas stay near the bottom mostly.
And are usually pretty territorial and aggressive.

Maybe some Peacocks.
A lot of mine stay from the middle up.

I like Julis and Multis, too
They stay pretty small.

My favorite is the Frontosa.
But not in a tank that size.
Fronts get big and need a big tank.

the dimensions are (h x l x w) 1 foot by 3 feet by 18.5 inches. in my two ten gallons i have guppies in one and gourami neons and corydoras in the other

that sounds like a 30 or 40 breeder. I would make it into a minni reef. salt water.
