"It looked like they just fell apart"
My aunty is a fish breeder and was recently given some large goldfish which she put in a fish tank outside, she went away for a few days and when she came back she found something quite strange. She said "It looked like they just fell apart".. She also said there was an oily film on the surface of the water. She suspects that one of her neighbors who she has been having trouble with lately had put something in the water but I'm curious as to what it could be. I know nothing about fish and google wasn't any help at all so I was wondering if anyone here would have some ideas or has experienced the same thing.

Sounds like the film is just protein.:) Try to agitate the surface using an airpump.:)

hmm, it could be oil, skim a bit of it in a fire-proof bucket or something and burn it, do you have a picture? A picture would help a lot and if it is oil, have a talk with the neighboor as i see no reason a fish pond will have oil on top of it.

Unfortunately I can't get a picture or test the stuff on the surface as it has already been cleaned up. Lesson learnt though.. No fish will be left outside ever again
