now here is a mystery....

ok i have a red wag platty that has what looks like a pimple behind its gill and at the base of her side fin. every other fish in her tank is healthy and i put her in an isolation tank. i have no idea what it is and no it looks nothing like ick. later i will post further details and and get you all the information but here is a quick list for this tank;

12 guppies
4 red wag platties
3 fresh water clams
3 small snalls (kinda spiral spikey shells)
1 sucker (not sure of the breed)

20 gallon high
30-50 HOB filter
DIY submersible filter
150 watt heater
perfect 79 degrees F
all test are in perfect range....

ok so here we continue the story behind this my wife has a 30 gallon set up all test also perfect and temp is the same as mine. friday of last week we find Ick on one of her gouramies and begin to treat the tank three days later we find a similar pimple on a different fish and what looks like a small worm or growth on the opposite side of the fish (at base of dorsal fin) now these two fish have never been in contact before and as i said all others appear healthy. the only simmilarity is that we got a shipment of plants along with the clams and snails.
my daughter thinks it a "dart" from a snail and we are not sure at all..
sooooo. what do you think and what other details can i provide to assist with solving this one....

I couldn't tell you what it is. However if it is a 'dart' then most ick treatment would probably kill it, right? I hope it is not a serious parasite.

thats my hope as well

we found it!!

yeah we found it it is anchor worm.... think we got rid of the ick in the wifes tank and now we are trying to find the common thread to infect our tanks with anchor worm we think either the new plants we ordered from ebay or the LFS .... any how today we start treatment and let things get better before we add anything more to any of the tanks.....

DustyBZoo 10-14-2009 11:23 AM

How do you treat for anchor worm?

bearwithfish 10-15-2009 07:06 AM

this product that the better of our two LFS sells. i am at work and can not think of the name off hand but they are little tabs you soak in water then add to the tank. it turns all your water blue and is very strong but it works it has been in the tank for 12 hours and already every one looks happier and no more flashing. what ones we saw are dead and were removed this morning. BTW i read a post about ick that said to turn up the heat on the tank to kill it off... IT WORKS GREAT!!!! search ick and read the whole post its is like a magic bullet for free....man i love this place so much good advice...
