Stocking my first 55 gallon tank
wondering if Cory Cats and Ghost Shrimp will get along considering they both move around the bottom of the tank so much ?
They absolutely will coexist together, and the ghost shrimp will inhabit all areas of the tank that have cover. They are actually pretty good swimmers. I would get at least 30 shrimp - closer to 50. With 50 shrimp in the tank, you'll probably only readily see about 10 at any given time. There's a reason they're called ghost shrimp :-) For corys I wouldn't get less than 10 for a 4 foot tank.
What else are you considering? A 55 is a great size for people to get their toes wet with big tanks. There are a lot of options available to you.
ty for the reply jaysee. Im not really sure. I think im gonna go with small fish. The tank in my profile has the list of fish that are currently in it, but most of them are my daughters lol. Once we get her a new lid and light I will start stocking my own again.
I used to have my 90 stocked with small fish. It was cool - you can have several schools in there.
yeah thats what Im kinda shooting for as well. I was thinking more like 6 cory cats, 6 ghost shrimp. Not sure what else just yet. Any ideals ?
You'll never see 6 ghost shrimp in a 55 gallon, so unless you want to play "find the ghost shrimp" I really think you should get more. Just don't get them from petsmart; a fish store will sell them for as low as 10 for $1 rather than $0.35 each. 1 per gallon is a common guide. As for the Corys, 6 would be the minimum for a 29 gallon tank. Of course you can always get some, and then decide if you want more. That's the fun of having a fish tank :-) But in my opinion and experience, a big tank with small fish looks best and is most enjoyable to watch when you have big schools. Other people may feel differently, I don't know. Don't care either. That's what's great about hobbies :-)
For color I think orange flame tetras are nice. They stay in the lower half of the tank. I like dwarf neon rainbows for that tank size - they are fascinating to watch, very active and flash brilliant blues when the lights hit them right, and they will stay in the upper half of the tank.
There really are a lot of choices, some of which may not be available to you because of your location.
I like to build my tank around a centerpiece fish - often the largest fish in the tank - the one that makes people say wow. Not just because of its relative size, but because of its beauty and presence in the tank as well.
was just looking at the Tetra section here, lots to choose from no doubt. As far as the shrimp they dont have to be the ghost ones by any means. Thinking more on the red ones, or blue.
red and blue shrimps might readily be eaten .. depending on what you will stockXD they're also fairly expensive >.<
My friend stocks his 75 gallon with a milliom neocaridina shrimps the only fish he has in there are a pair of CPDs XD
