Yet another Cory question LOL! Hey Guys I have a 20 Gal tank with a male betta, and 8 tetras, 3 diff speices, I was wondering if I could put a school of 6 pygmy corys in my tank? My betta is very good with other fish, he seems to like them? I was gonna let my tank run for a couple weeks, and then introduce some corys? What do you guys think? Don |
Having never mixed Corydoras pygmaeus with a betta, I will leave it to the Betta specialists concerning compatibility. But if you do decide on pygmies, make sure the tank is well matured. If you have read a couple of recent threads on these fish you will note how sensitive they are to water parameters and quality. Like many others, I have lost them when introduced into newer tanks (within 2-3 months of setup), but never in tanks that have been running for several months and are biologically stable. A group of 6 (or more) is good. They do appreciate lots of plants, as they spend their days browsing over the surfaces of plant leaves, wood, rocks, much more than the substrate. Byron. |
I have had regular corys with a male betta in a community tank with no problems but I have never had the pygmys. I don't think there would be a problem but like Byron said just make sure the tank has been running a while so you don't lose the cute little guys. |
A happy, healthy betta needs a temp of 77-86F. According to planetcatfish.com, pygmy cories do best in water that is 71.6-78.8°F...I'm thinking that might make them incompatable in itself. As Byron said, these guys are fickle about water parameters. I lost 4 pygmies out of 6 myself recently. I suspect my water was too warm, too hard, pH too high, and the tank was too new. In fact, out of all the corrys I researched, only 2 fit my water parameters...Sterbai and Oiapoquensis. Most cories just like cool, soft, water. |
Thanks guys, My setup has only beeen running for a hand full of days, the betta and tetras seems to be very happy and healty so far :) I onlt have two plants right now, One BIG fake one in the middle of the tank, and a small live one in my betta fav corner..I will have to give it some time i guess. Thanks Don |
