Using kive rock in a sump as a bubble trap
I have read several places that building a box in the sump, filling with live rock is good, and directing the overflow into it. I have , in all my looking not seen one, or a pic. My question, where do the drain holes on the sides of the box supposed to be located? Top, middle, bottom? I would think, at the bottom, but I would like to be sure.
You don't actually need a box. Just a tower of live rock to help break up the water flow. This is primarily to help reduce the bubbles that are returned to the display by the return pump. The benefit to the water is really nothing to speak of.
I do this in my 54 reef, and it works well to eliminate microbubbles in the sump.
